do they drop inscriptable items...?

and :| why can't i find one in uw when i do smite runs

No, chests in FoW/UW drop proph/factions style drops. The only thing there that drops inscrib items is the chest for completing all the quests.

Also, FoW/UW seem to have one or two base chests throughout the whole of the map, and more spawn as you complete/take quests. This seems to be to prevent large scale chest running I'd imagine. Since smite pits are a popular farm location it makes sense for the base chests to not be there. If that makes sense o_O

They don't drop inscribable items. The reward chest at the end is the only chest in UW or FoW that can drop inscribable weapons.

ANet adjusted the chest spawns a long time ago.
